Blue Hill Road Trip-Sat June 4-editable

June 4, 2016 @ 12:00 pm - 7:00 pm
$59.00 | Sold Out | Buy the Bus

First up, down Rte 1 a few miles is Penobscot Bay Brewing and Winterport Winery. Owned by Michael and Joan Anderson, it opened its doors in the fall of 2001 but it really had its beginning in the Christmas gift of a home winemaking kit some 30 years earlier. What was a hobby then has now become a full time work and a family involved business – what used be stored in the family basement now occupies the 3200 sq. ft. winery and 1100 sq. ft. tasting room. A tasting room where you’ll be able to sample their brewery offerings as well as their delightful fruit wines and cider. Their tap room/gift shop is filled with their own delicious creations as well as other Maine-Made products.

Next we traverse to the beautiful town of Blue Hill and their local brewpub DeepWater Brewing. Located on the lovely Arborvine Restaurant property we are greeted by grape vines, hop bines and a beautifully restored 200 year old barn that houses DeepWater Brewing and the taproom. Tim Hikade, head brewer, as well as head chef, is creating some very solid brews in his new space. A nod to classic styles with Blue hill flair. They’ll invite us in to sample his beers in a “brewery view” tap room inside the old barn. I say old, but it was painstakingly renovated in 2014, but still retains the old world post and beam charm. Samples will be provided. DeepWater sells merchandise and growlers to go.

Just down the road in Sedgwick, we will visit Al and Mia Strong at Strong Brewing Company. Originally started as a CSB brewery for the locals, the Strong family is now brewing every few days. During our visit Mia will welcome you into the tap room for a taste of Al’s hard work. You probably will see Al, most likely working in the 1 barrel brewery crafting up some form of deliciousness. No tour is necessary as you will be in the brewery separated only by a few reclaimed windows hanging between you and the action. Outside we can lounge on picnic tables and Adirondack chairs while checking the antics of the chickens and ducks on the property. Samples will be provided. Strong Brewing sells merchandise and growlers to take home.

Last but not least we will hit Barncastle Restaurant & Pub for wood fired pizza and a pint. Built in the 1880’s, Barncastle was the first of Blue Hill’s grand summer cottages. Known also as the Kline Cottage and Ideal Lodge, the sprawling home was designed by Boston Architect George Clough for Virgil & Effie Kline, she the eccentric manager of the Boston Ideal Opera Company. It now is home to a fine hotel, restaurant and pub. Barncastle also plays host to weddings, banquets and private parties. Vegetarian and vegan friendly, almost everything here is made from scratch. A truly unique atmosphere awaits you as we share some of the best pizza in Maine and wash it down with something local.

At the end of this tour, we will drop you off at the back deck of Nocturnem Draft Haus, where you are invited to come in and share outstanding burgers and beer with your new found friends. Cheers!                COST-$59pp
