Road Trip to Skowhegan-Saturday October 14
October 14, 2017 @ 11:30 am - 4:30 pm
Oak Pond Brewery (OPB) opened in 1996 as the first brewery in 115 years in Skowhegan, Maine. The brewhouse, a 14 barrel system from Prince Edward Island, Canada, is housed in a converted chicken barn on Oak Pond Road. In 2003, Don and Nancy Chandler of Canaan became the new owners of the microbrewery, which continues to be family owned and operated. OPB produces about 500 barrels of beer a year for local distribution. Unlike many microbreweries, OPB produces aged lagers as well as ales. These beers are classic old world styles using only the purist ingredients; two row malted barley, imported and American hops, ale and lager yeast strains, and well water. At the brewery, six beers are always on tap including special seasonal brews. Our product is truly hand crafted with all brewing, fermenting, conditioning, and bottling done on the premises. “Try it ’cause it’s local, drink it ’cause it’s good!”
Next up-Bigelow Brewing in Skowhegan. Sitting on a beautiful hilltop overlooking the valley is the homestead brewery. A nicely landscaped, rustic barn atmosphere greets its guests. Be sure to check the onsite hop bines that were recently planted. Inside, shiny stainless and granite counters embellish the tap room where 4-6 creations are poured. A recently built wood-fired oven is on site for amazing pizza creations. Samples, merchandise and growlers to go in this very unique brewery.
Then it’s on to one of our favorite winery/distillery combinations; Tree Spirits in Oakland. Maine’s apples and maple syrup are well known for excellent quality and taste. Tree Spirits founder Bruce Olson experimented with apple and maple wines for years prior to starting Tree Spirits. He chose to make sparkling wines because they are fun to drink. Now, even more fun is the distilling of spirits. From apple jack and knotted maple to an outstanding traditional Absinthe, Bruce really knows his craft. Come and see why they are winning awards for their wines and spirits. You’ll probably even get to see the still in action. Samples, merchandise and bottles to go are available.
At the end of this local tour, we will drop you off at the back deck of Nocturnem Draft Haus, where you are invited to come in and share the atmosphere with your new found friends. Cheers!
